HOW TO WRITE
A FAREWELL LETTER

By Nadia Irshād

New Paragraph

This is a ceremony.

Dim the lights,

pull a long match

and light a thin candle.

Close your eyes.

Rest for a moment in the gulf between your eyelids

Open them once you've arrived.

Envision an inkwell.

Pushing lingering lines across a page.

Every stroke moves through your fingers, from your wrist,

directed by your pulse.

Adore the hush between each limb of every letter.

Hum.

what to write what to write what to write

Set your intention.

Start from the beginning

and as you proceed you'll be letting go.

Take a deep breath.

It's all over now.

You have embarked.

While you determine the exact words to include in this letter your sailboat is beyond the horizon.

The motif is the morrow.
